What is Candle Tunneling + Tips On How To Avoid It.

What is Candle Tunneling?

Candle tunneling occurs when a candle burns down the middle, leaving a ring of unused wax around the edges. Tunneling not only detracts from your candle's aesthetics but also shortens its overall lifespan.

Three tips on how to prevent your candle from tunneling:

  1. Short Burn Times: The first burn is crucial. If a candle is not allowed to melt its entire surface during the initial burn, it's likely to tunnel on subsequent burns.
  2. Trim Your Wick: A trimmed wick can make all the difference. Make sure to trim your wick with each use. Trimming the wick will also prevent sooting.
  3. Avoid Drafts: Airflow from drafts or ceiling fans can disrupt the candle's flame, causing uneven burning.

If you notice your candle does start to tunnel, use the blow dryer method! Skoven candles are made with 100% all-natural soy wax, meaning the candle has a higher melting point. A hairdryer has the perfect amount of heat to melt the sides of the candles. Hold the blow dryer on the outside of the glass vessel. We do not recommend holding the dryer above the candle.
